You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. - Desiderata ALOHA, WELCOME TO PANGAIA!!!! Pangaia Community is no longer accepting interns or work traders because the land was recently sold.
We are the land, a group of people and a common vision. Situated on the eastern edge of the volcanic rift zone of Hawaii, this is an extremely fertile area, blessed with equal parts showers and sun. Nearby, you can discover thermal warm water ponds, natural steam vents, black sand beaches and active lava flows. Just 20 miles downwind from Pangaia, the volcano goddess Pele is presently pouring herself into the ocean, creating the newest terrain on the planet. Constant change seems to be a reoccurring theme - both on the Island of Hawaii and for Pangaia. Just down the road, the small village of Kapoho was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1960. As a result of this explosion, 3 feet of cinders fell on the area, leaving the land very rich. The original founder of Pangaia, Manis (a graduate of geology), was serendipitously born in the same year as the volcanic event that added so much fertility to the earth he would later call “home.” Being surrounded by impermanence is a reminder of our own fluidity as well as both growth and adaptation; evolution in our surroundings and ourselves. Just as the landforms of Hawaii are in constant flux, so the people of Pangaia come and go. Since its inception in 1991, Pangaia has hosted hundreds of visitors and residents, all coming from very different backgrounds with a wide spread of ages. We envision unity between earth mother Gaia and ourselves. We seek a full and complete expression of our being through work, art, play and our relationships with each other. One of the most fundamental goals at Pangaia is to move toward sustainability and harmony with our environment. Through this process, we are discovering ourselves and our nature - cultivating an intimate bond between soil, plant, animal, and human, and crafting a landscape of harmonious resonance. Inspired by those goals, we are a mainly vegan, raw-food community and living active permaculture.
