Too often the aahriman of scenes feel nebulous or lacking in real description. He then takes Amon’s armour and staff for his own.
This could have served to build up mystery behind his identity and question just who could be so powerful, but the book lets this slip surprisingly early on. The good is almost perfect to me.
A twist that comes as a surprise, but still feels natural and plausible, all things considered.
Jun 30, Tarl rated it really liked it Shelves: In the first instance, Ahriman was able to gain access to the Eldar Webway using knowledge extracted from the captured Inquisitor Bronislaw Czevak.
Sep 19, Jeff Sinclair rated it it was amazing Shelves: The Thousand Sons ex-chief librarian is one of my favourite personas from the HH universe.
In the one time the book actually depicts the Rubric taking place, it is incredibly underwhelming and lacks emotive descriptions the sheer power, horror or details described in prior events.
Seeing Ahriman as a lowly punk renegade on the run was an interesting twist. Hiding under a false identity among a vessel of scavengers and renegades, Ahriman is little more than a self pitying shadow of the man he once was. He saw the Imperium of Man as a repressive, violent theocracy, where the Emperor and several of his Primarchs but not Horus were worshiped as gods by the masses. For me, I was hoping to find out more about the inner workings of Ahzek Ahriman, how his past failures and loss have shaped him, his anger at his fall from grace in exile, his continued motivation, what he has learnt since casting the Rubric, what his ultimate goals are, etc.
M41, Ahriman was summoned back to the Planet of the Sorcerers by Magnus the Red himself for the first time since the casting of the Rubric.

Czevak had been the only human ever invited by the Eldar to be a “guest” of the hidden Eldar Craftworld that is the Black Library — in reality he had been used by the Eldar as bait and a foil for Ahriman.
Even among the ranks of the loyalist space marines there are few figures who stand out quite so well as the brutally unrelenting Ahriman, Kharn the Betrayer, the exole Cypher of the Fallen Angels, or the dreaded Ahriman of the Thousand Sons.
All of this is plausible. The Emperor ordered the Primarch Leman Russ, Magnus’ greatest rival, to mobilise exi,e Space Wolves Legion and the witchhunters known as the Sisters of Silence and take Magnus into custody to be returned to Terra to stand trial for violating the Council of Nikaea ‘s prohibitions against the use of sorcery within the Imperium. He had believed it would work, that it would undo the change that was destroying his Legion.
Aghast at a revelation which gave some truth to the charges of the Space Wolves and the Emperor’s fears of allowing the practice of sorcery, Ahriman found his trust in his Ahdiman further shaken, qhriman Magnus ultimately used his own potent psychic abilities to remove the details of the deal he had struck with the Dark Gods from his Chief Librarian’s mind before Ahriman could understand its full import.
They called themselves the Summation. He knows the ahrima names of 9x9x9 daemons, and possesses pacts which can bring daemonic armies agriman to his call. When she asks why he is letting her live despite her betrayal, he ruefully replies that he shares the same hope as her: Magnus had foreseen a terrifying vision of the Warmaster Horus falling from grace and dragging the burgeoning Imperium of Man into a war more terrible than any of them could imagine — an Age of Darkness that had been prophesied tens of thousands of standard years before exipe the ancient Aegyptos of Old Terra.
This awakens Ahriman’s dormant powers – once unleashed, he quickly kills everyone in the room, except for the two Rubric Marines, and Maroth, who is left a crippled, gibbering idiot. So we find Ahriman, a person running from the past, in self-exile denying his powers and looking for salvation or death with a band of renegades called The Harrowing. Arhiman also gathered voidships, other Chaos Space Marineshundreds of Rubricae and a number of apprentices, who themselves became formidable Chaos Sorcerers in their own right.
The Harrowing’s work is interrupted by the surprise appearance of another ship, bearing an emissary to the Titan Child: However, fate is unwilling to allow such a person to remain unnoticed. Finally, the time continuum differences between the Eye and ‘real’ space was fun, especially as an explanation for his power level and what was going on in the Imperium. Though he did not exactly know the means in which Horus would exlie, all he ariman perceive from his vision is that ahirman primordial and corrupt would take root in his soul.
Maroth is a pathetic wretch, mutilated shadow of his former self. Aug 25, Tepintzin rated it really liked it Shelves: I guess I’ll just try a few other novels before I come back for more.
His soul has suffered far worse fate – the young warrior has lost some of his memories, part of his virtues, some dear things for him are now alien.
Scraps of lore, artefacts both obscure and profane, and rare souls draw him like a raven to a corpse. That is understandable, since the story occurs near and in the Eye of Terror, so avoiding the definite location on the 40k timeline can be avoided by that fact alone, although I often times wanted exkle know how long Ahriman himself had been in this state in which we find him at the beginning of the novel.

There is something admirable in this working-man fanatacism, most famously embodied in one saying of the Space Marines “Only in death does duty end.
He operates exioe a lowly sorcerers in the traitor marines’ warband, named The Harrowing. You can guess what is going to happen, it’s fairly obvious as the tale progresses. Mortally wounded, with his back ajriman, Magnus invoked ancient sorceries in order to escape Prospero by opening a gateway through the Warp into the Eye of Terror where a Daemon World the Planet of the Sorcerers had been prepared for Magnus and the remnants of his Legion by their new patron god, Tzeentch.
This represented the first time that both Legions had come into contact with the realities of Chaos. Skip to content Home Review: With his own knowledge of the Rubric, Ahriman is able to reach his powers inside Amon’s suit of armour and burn him to ashes.
