Unfortunately, Epstein was not satisfied with these records, and turns to some really marginal sources to sex up the story.

Hammer’s life was built on layers of deceit, and Epstein uncovers them, one by one. I rate 5 stars on a book perhaps but one out of a hundred times. A dirt-dishing, painstakingly corroborated life story that sets the record straight on a master con man who fooled most of the people most of the time.

Repeatedly in the book, Epstein takes credit for “discovering” things that have been widely known for decades, and which are discussed in detail in previous Hammer biographies. A lengthy front-page obituary in The New York Times lauded him as a successful businessman “who long sought peace between the United States and the Soviet Union and financed research for a cancer cure”.

If you are interested in th the unvarnished version of AH, this is an excellent work to begin the revelation. But the official version of Hammer’s life, which incorporated many of the major figures and key events of the twentieth century, was in fact a myth, carefully nurtured and embellished for nearly seventy years.
