Flore looks after Jean-Jacques’ every need on condition that Max, her fancyman and a real ratbag, lives in the house too. Better, perhaps, than in any other novel in The Human Comedy, it is intimately interwove into the fabric of the tale. I have read books from this era that showed a greater understanding of human nature I’m thinking Eliot and Zola but not many that were as as much fun to read.
They are inferior animals to men, and you must make them afraid of you, for the worst plight that can befall us is to be governed by the brutes!
